How to Actually Crush Your Goals (No More Wishful Thinking!)

Advice #169 from Dad, I Never Got!

Let’s get real—every year, people set goals like:
🔥 “I’m gonna get in shape and lose 10 by Jan 30th!” (Then eats a whole pizza two days later.)
🔥 “I’m gonna stop wasting money and save!” (Later buys an $8 iced latter coffee – daily)
🔥 “I’m gonna be more productive!” (Then binge-watches Netflix instead -I’m guilty of this one)

Sounds way too familiar? Yeah, we’ve all been there. But here’s the deal—a goal without a plan is like a car with no steering wheel. You can put all the energy you want into it, but you’ve got ZERO control over where it’s going.  At the end of your not dead, you’re tired, exhausted and got nowhere.

So, if you’re serious about actually winning in 2025 or anytime really, you need a game plan. And lucky for you, I’ve got one for you.

The 6-Step Game Plan for Crushing Your Goals.

1. Write Down Your Goals! (No, -Seriously. WRITE. THEM. DOWN.)

If your goal only exists in your head, it’s basically just a dream—invisible really and kinda useless. Get a notebook, your phone an APP – whatever, or even write it on your arm if you have to. Just get it in writing and be specific.

🚫 Bad goal: “I wanna be healthy.”
✅ Good goal: “I’m going to drink water instead of soda everyday and work out 3 times a week.”

2. Make a List of Actions (Because Goals Don’t Magically Happen)

You make a goal to learn Spanish or get cut abs.  You don’t just wake up one day fluent in Spanish or suddenly have six-pack abs. You need real measurable action steps to get there.

For example, if your goal is to save $500, your action list might be:
✔️ Stop buying dumb stuff.
✔️ Pack lunch instead of hitting up the vending machine.
✔️ Do some side hustles (mowing lawns, tutoring, selling old clothes—whatever works)
✔️ Save 10% of every check, – no exceptions.

3. Break Action List Into 3-Month Chunks (Because a Year is Waaay Too Long)

Big goals, are overwhelming big time.  So, instead of freaking out, chop them into bite-sized pieces.  Remember a huge mountain is actually made of small rocks.  You can move it!

Break up a huge goal into nine months (as an example)…

👀 First 3 months: Learn the basics, learn or do one new thing (start small) about your goal daily.
🚀 Next 3 months: Step it up -build better habits (increase effort) using the things you learn the first three months.
🏆 Final 3 months: Go beast mode (finish strong).  Make those new winning part of your life and become the new you.

4. Look at Your Goals DAILY (Make It Impossible to Ignore)

If you don’t see it, you’ll forget it and the old habits will creep up again.  Put your goals EVERYWHERE you will see them—on your phone lock screen, on a sticky note in your mirror, on a vision board or even as your Wi-Fi password 😱 (yeah, I said it).

5. Visualize for 5 Minutes Every Day (No, It’s Not Just Daydreaming)

Close your eyes and picture yourself as having reached your goal. Imagine what it feels like, what you look like winning.  Feel how your life has changed. Why? Because our brains are weird that way—if you can make it believe that something is like “done”, subconsciously it will do all that is necessary to make it real.  What you repeatedly tell it, it will get done. So tell it you’re gonna succeed.  Five minutes everyday – imagine your goal done!

6. Do SOMETHING Every Day (Even if It’s Tiny)

Even the smallest steps move you forward. A little progress every day beats waiting for motivation to strike (spoiler: it won’t).

🚶 Bad plan: “I’ll start when I feel ready.”
🏃 Good plan: “I’ll do at least one thing every day to move forward.”
