#138 – 10 Life Lessons From My Dog

🐾 Life Lessons from My Dog

I don’t know if you have a dog or even if you like dogs, but, my dog was my best friend when I was a young boy in New York City.  I loved her and she taught me some of my life’s greatest lessons.  She was a beautiful, playful german shepherd named Poopi (I didn’t name her).  She was my best friend and confidant but the best thing about Poopi was the lessons in life she taught me. It was a very long time ago but those lessons are still a part of my life today. I want to share those lessons with you and maybe you can help Poopi spread those lessons to other people who might need them in their lives.

Poopi didn’t care if I had a good day, bad day, wanted to have a fun day or just wanted to be left alone, kind of a day.  She was always there waiting by the door for when I got home from school— head tilted, ears perked, tail wagging all over the place, happy I was simply there.  And I couldn’t help but to think…

“What if we loved people the way dogs love us?”

No judgment, no grudges.  Just full-on presence and joy that says, “You’re home. And that was enough.”

🐾 10 Best Life Lessons - from My Dog "Poopi"

Lesson #1: How to welcome home someone you care about.  Always greet the people you care about at the door with open joy and enthusiasm. Let them know your happy because they made it home safe, even if they just gone for a few hours.

Lesson #2: Take long walks with someone you care about every day.  Enjoy the time together and take in the fresh air and simply enjoy the moment.

Advice From Dad – I never Got

A heart felt, compilation of 369 pieces of advice I learned from making real life mistakes growing up without my father.

Lesson #3: If you encounter danger along the way, protect the ones you love. Stay alert for dangers and avoid them if you can but be ready to defend your loved ones from them, so you both can get home safe.

Lesson #4: Rest often and take naps when you need to. If you feel tired or just want to catch your breath, stop, and find a nice bed somewhere and nap.  You will wake refreshed and have more energy throughout the day.

Lesson #5:  Decide to be happy and don’t be afraid to show it. No matter what happens during the day that you can’t control, just choose to be happy.  Don’t let someone ruin your day.  It may be offensive or maybe even mean but, just walk away and decide to be happy – it’s simply a life choice.  Don’t let bad stuff keep you sad.  Forget, forgive and be happy.

Lesson #6: Play Often and be grateful. Enjoy life for what it is.  Be grateful for the little things life gives you.  If you do, life has a way of giving you more of it.

Lesson #7:  Drink plenty of water.  Drink lots of  water throughout the day.  A simple sip here and there is OK, but keeping drinking water often so your body can do whatever it is, it needs to do to stay healthy.

Lesson #8: Chase your dreams.  Visualize your goals and chase them, relentlessly. Work on achieving  them everyday.  Search and dig for them if you must but persist until you have found and reached your goal.  Even if it was just an old bone.

Lesson #9: Enjoy the simple things in life.  Take the time to enjoy life.  It’s not all just work and school, listen to the birds, feel the breeze in the air, the warm sun on your face.   Enjoy nature’s beauty all around you.

Lesson #10:Be a loyal friend.  Be there for your friend.  If maybe he has had a bad day and maybe he is angry or upset, just be there for them.  Get close to them slowly and quietly.  Sit quietly by their side.  Close enough so they know you’re there, in case they need a hug but far enough to give them space to just be in their own thoughts.  When they are better get ready to play.
