A Lesson I Didn’t Get - Until Too Late
There are moments in life that change you forever, even if you don’t recognize them at the time. This is one of those stories — a real moment from my childhood that taught me the importance of gratitude, and why waiting to say “thank you” can cost you more than you think.
If there’s one message I want you to take from this AFD chapter, it’s this:
Gratitude delayed is gratitude lost.
The Teacher Who Told Me I Was “Slow”
When I was a teenager in New York City, I had a math teacher named Mr. Rey. To this day, I don’t know if it was a personality conflict or plain dislike — but I can say this: the man did not like me.
I struggled with math. I asked for help. He made it clear help wasn’t coming.
From day one he believed I belonged in remedial math, and by mid-term he got exactly what he wanted. While my classmates moved on to Algebra, I was reassigned to the “slow” class. I remember sitting there confused, embarrassed, and honestly… heartbroken.
But life has a strange way of showing us that the things meant to break us often become the things that build us.
Ms. Rodriguez — The Woman Who Saw More in Me
Except she never treated us like that. She evaluated every student individually, and for me, she didn’t hold back. She taught me Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, basic Calculus, and Math Theory — concepts I wasn’t even supposed to see for years.
She didn’t see a slow kid. She saw potential. And she changed the entire trajectory of my life
From “Remedial” to Regents Honors
Because of her guidance, patience, and belief in me, I …
- Graduated with top NYC Regents honors
- Was accepted into Aviation High School — one of New York’s specialized schools that accepts only 500 of 3,000 applicants
- Later qualified for the United States Air Force
Thanks to Ms. Rodriquez I built the life I have today.

My Search for Her — and the Painful Truth
Years later, I wanted to thank her. Truly thank her.
This was before social media — so finding someone wasn’t easy.
I used the Yellow Pages.
I wrote letters to the Department of Education.
I searched everywhere.
Eventually, I found her. She had retired and was living with her family in Miami. I bought two dozen roses, a box of chocolates, and drove to her home excited — ready to tell her how she had changed my life.
But life had one more lesson for me.
She answered the door… and she didn’t recognize me.
Ms. Rodríguez had developed advanced Alzheimer’s.
All those years I waited to say “thank you”…
I waited too long.
I gave the flowers and chocolates to her daughter, said goodbye, and walked away knowing that she would never hear the gratitude she deserved.
Lesson #314: Be Grateful For every Moment
That moment broke me. But it also taught me something I now carry with me — and share with you:
Gratitude delayed… is gratitude lost.
Say “thank you” today. Don’t wait. Don’t assume you’ll have another chance. Tell the people who helped you that they mattered. Tell the people you love that you love them.
Tell the people who lifted you that they made a difference.
Be Grateful for Every Moment
Your life can change because of someone you didn’t expect. Your future can shift because of a single act of kindness. And your gratitude — expressed at the right time — can be the “thank you” someone needs to keep going. Don’t wait.
